for such a time as this

October 11, 2022

Good afternoon,

” For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this ?  “.  Mordecai to his cousin Esther .

The Jews might be all killed. Haman, the king’s assistant , is trying to get the King to call for genocide against the Jews. Mordecai sees it and calls on Esther, in her role as Queen, to stop it. She is not allowed to go to the King unannounced. If she does this, she may be killed. She decides that she will do it, and she survives and her people are saved from extinction.

What are you being invited to not be silent about today ? My greatest temptation to sin is to not do something that I know I should do. I do not commit adultery, nor do I steal and nor do I murder, but I am silent sometimes when a racist comment is made around a restaurant table , and I do not want to cause a fuss. To not want to cause a fuss is a sinful act. Maybe I am eating at the restaurant for ‘ such a time as this ‘ !?

Mordeci and Esther were minorities in the society. They were looked down upon in everyday life. The church should be focused on people at the margins of the society. They have usually been unloved and blamed for our societal ills. Maybe, just maybe, we, as God’s people, are being renewed to suffer for those who do not have a voice in our society. This evening is the candidates meeting for Woolwich Township. As I run again for public office, may I remember the wise words of Mordecai to his cousin. Win or lose, I have come to this time to be of service to God.

Grace and peace in and for our world of life and faith.
