Jesus as Refugee

December 22, 2022
( I will not be posting blogs from December 25 through January 2nd. )
Good afternoon,

So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt,  where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called my son.”  Matthew 2:14-15

Jesus and his family were refugees. They heard in a dream that they were to go to Egypt. Did they tell other families with  children around two years of age that Herod was looking for all of them. ? Did Mary and Joseph hear about the people who lost children that night of Herod’s violence ?

The Holy Family probably went to the northernmost part of Egypt. They did not have the stuff needed for protection. They were Jews, and the Jews and Egyptians were often at war. They probably did not have provisions and they depended on the compassion of people along the way. And when they arrived in Egypt were they welcomed, or were they put in jail or in a camp with other undesirables ? The life of refugees is filled with fear, terror and uncertainty. You never know when it is going to end. You might do anything to protect your family.

I wonder how Mary and Joseph prayed to God when they were refugees ? ” God. I thought the baby was to be our salvation ? ” or ” Dear God, this is not the life of a King ? ” or ” God, what are you doing ?”. After a few years, Herod died, and they were told, in a dream, that they could go back to Nazareth. How was the walk back to their homeland ? Were they welcomed back or was their house taken over by people who thought they were not coming back, or had been killed. The story that Jesus was a refugee should tell us that the story of Christmas is one of humanity’s ills, and we should always be compassionate to the world of homelessness, drug addiction or the lives of refugees,  and not to be judgmental to the experiences of others.

Grace and peace of God during this season of Christmas.
