cultural differences

February 25, 2021

Good evening,

Brenda left today. She came to live with us in April 2020. She needed a place to stay after her summer job fell through because of the pandemic. She was a friend of our daughter. We did not know how long she would stay. In December she finished her master’s degree, and she got a job at the University of Waterloo. She moved to an apartment in Kitchener this afternoon.

It was a cultural experience. She is not an African-American. She is an African from Uganda. She has lived in North America for many years, but came to Canada to study in 2019. She is on the road to becoming a Canadian. I wonder if she will ever return to Uganda.

Paul said , ” There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” Galatians 3:28

We do have differences. Brenda’s cultural benchmarks are different from ours. We have the same faith background. She speaks a few different languages. I think she understands the world differently than I do. Her history is from Africa, and mine is from small town Ontario.

But we got along despite our differences. I think Paul is stating a vision for the world. We are not quite there yet. But, we can still love one another, and look into the eyes of someone different than ourselves.

Grace and peace,

Fred
