Thank you to the people of Poole Menonite. You donated over $550.00 to the fundraiser of MennoHomes ( by this time next year it will be called Beyond Housing ). It has been a project since about 2001 to build affordable housing for low income families and seniors. MennoHomes does not just build it , and then turn it over to someone else. They have staff that continue to be in touch with the residents, in Kitchener, Wellesley and Elmira. These buildings are communities.
Affordable housing makes a big difference in helping to move people out of poverty. If housing is safe, clean and affordable it makes life liveable. I have always had housing in my life. I do not know what it feels like to think about what bills to pay: rent, clothes, bus passes or food ? I have lived a privileged life.
It says in the Bible that , ‘Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.” Luke 9:58. It also says, “…leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capernaum, which was by the lake in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali— Matthew 4:13 . Jesus wants us all to have a safe place to live. Maybe he had lakefront property ? I think it is a human right, that all governments should work toward that goal for everyone in the world. Health care, food and housing are all rights for everyone.
We have too high housing prices. It is not all market driven. Interest rates are rising, and that will make mortgage rates higher. What should be the solution ? We cannot afford more people dealing with homelessness.
WWJD ? He was a carpenter. He would build more affordable housing with cheaper rents in Nazareth and Capernaum. What would he do in Milverton, is the more important question for us today ? Thank you again for your generosity !
Fred
