” When evening came, Jesus arrived with the Twelve.”Mark 14:12
It has been an emotional week for the Twelve. At least twice, Jesus told them he was going to die. There was a great parade at the beginning of the week. Jesus, always disturbing the peace, turns the tables over in the market, and declares their work as a , ” den of robbers “. Then, right before the last meal, a woman washes his feet/head in public, and he stands up for her !
Now, they are to sit down for a Passover meal. All of the Twelve are Jewish, a few fishermen, a tax collector and rebel/terrorist among them. All of them know they are under threat from the religious and political leaders. Some might have thought, ” Do we go in for the meal, or should we go back to our former lives in Galilee ? “
Jesus welcomes them, including Judas. Jesus looks nervous and worried. Maybe he is worried for his disciples. They have not always understood what must happen. They do not have enough faith. They struggle. Jesus says that he will pray for them ( in the Gospel of John ).
I assume the table was not like Da Vinci painted it. They might have lounged on the floor in a circle ? Where would you put yourself, as you came into the Upper Room. What would be your overriding emotion ? How would you react when Jesus said, ” one of you will betray me. ”
Shalom and strength in our communion with Christ.
