Good afternoon,
“War is absurd. For thousands of years, human beings have chosen to settle differences by obliterating one another. And when we are not obliterating one another we spend an enormous amount of time and attention coming up with better ways to obliterate one another next time. It is all a little strange, if you think about it. ”
Malcolm Gladwell in Bomber Mafia (2021)
“Love one another, for love comes from God.”
— from the First letter of John
Gladwell’s book gives attention to the bombing in WWII. During the pandemic, the nations that have nuclear weapons spent billions on the upkeep of their weapons systems. And nations keep the nuclear arsenal because they want to keep the balance of power just right so no one will use the hydrogen bombs. The policy is called ” Mutually Assured Destruction “. Now this is absurd. How many vaccines could have been bought for the Global South with that money ?
And people say loving our enemies is weird and absurd ! You cannot talk to or love your enemies. It will not work. If it can work with our neighbours, it can work with nations of this world. The early church had all kinds of people when it began in the first century. Rich and poor, Jew and Greek were all believers in Christ. They should have been enemies, but they overcame their hatred through Christ .
Write to Marc Garneau, our Foreign Affairs Minister. He was in Jordan this week. Our daughter held up a sign asking him to help stop the Israeli apartheid against Palestinians. Invite Mr. Garneau to have Canada stop selling arms to Turkey, the United States and Saudi Arabia. Mr. Garneau is a smart guy. He was an astronaut . Appeal to his logic. And it doesn’t cost you a stamp to write to Mr. Garneau. It is free.
Grace and peace.
Fred
